Electric Car Myths 2011With both the Chevrolet Volt and the Nissan Leaf coming out this month, it is worthwhile to take a look at some of the myths out there still regarding electric cars.

First, the most repeated myth is that the electric grid can't handle this. The utilities have been working for years for these cars to enter the grid and not cause blackouts. Most home charging stations will operate only during off peak hours. In 2011, "smart" chargers are poised to hit the market and will decide for you when to charge. It will be based on your commute distance, local rates, and demand in your neighborhood.

The next big concern with electric cars is that your electric bill will skyrocket. Granted, it will go up. However, you are looking at paying an extra $27 (approximately) a month for electricity, but you will be saving around $97 on gas (this is comparing an electric car to a battery only car that goes 12,000 miles a year). If you are charging in off hours, it will be more efficient and cheaper (especially if you are able to use a smart charger).
